Wood-Burned Name Plaque for a Kids’ Room (Safe for Younger Kids)

Few things land quite like a name on the door. A little wood-burned plaque above the coat hooks, letters spelling out whose room this is, and suddenly a bedroom belongs to somebody. It’s a lovely first project because the brief is simple, the result is treasured, and you can absolutely make it safe for younger hands to join in.

Start with the right blank

Basswood plaque blank

A smooth basswood plaque is ideal. It’s pale enough for the name to pop, soft enough to burn easily, and comes with a tidy edge that already looks finished.

Getting a child’s name perfectly even

What you need: a set of letter stencils to draw straight onto the plaque, or graphite transfer paper to print the name in a font you love and trace it on. Lay it out in pencil, count the letters, centre it, then commit.

Want the little one to help? Skip the heat

A young child can’t safely hold a hot pen, but they can decorate. What you need: a Scorch Marker, a heat-activated pen that draws on like a felt tip and only browns when an adult warms it afterwards. Let them add a sun or their initials in the corner, then you set it with heat later.

For more ways to involve children safely, our guide to wood burning for kids without the burn is packed with ideas.

Keep the hot-pen work for the grown-up and hand the child a safe job: picking the font, choosing the doodle, or drawing it in Scorch Marker. Involved and safe beats sidelined every time.

Seal it and hang it

What you need: a coat of Watco Danish Oil to protect the wood and bring out the warmth of the burn. Wipe on, wipe the excess off, and let it dry before hanging.

Element Choice Good for
Blank Basswood plaque Clean surface, finished edge
Layout Stencils or transfer paper Even, centred lettering
Kid-safe option Scorch Marker No-heat decorating
Finish Danish oil Durable, warms the tone

Hang it at the child’s eye level so they see their name every time they walk in. Fancy something bigger for the hallway? Scale the idea up into a live-edge welcome sign.
