Building a Pyrography Kit From Scratch: The One-of-Each Shopping List

Wire shader nib burning feather texture on light wood

You’ve decided to start burning wood, and now you’re staring at a screen full of bundles, wondering which one won’t disappoint you in a month. Here’s the honest shortcut: you don’t need a kit. You need one good pen and a handful of cheap, sensible extras. Build it yourself, one of each, and you’ll spend less and understand your setup far better.

The one rule: buy the pen well, the rest cheap

Your pen is the tool your hand lives on. Everything else is consumable. So put your money here and save it everywhere else.

K KERNOWO 17-in-1 kit

What you need: a proper pen with adjustable temperature. The K KERNOWO 17-piece kit is a friendly all-in-one starting point if you want tips included, or the YIHUA 939-II gives you a station with a proper dial you’ll grow into. Torn on nib style? Our wire nib vs solid point guide settles it.

Wood: buy pale, buy flat, buy plenty

What you need: a pack of basswood blanks for practising, plus a bag of pre-drilled wood slices for quick ornaments you can finish in one sitting. More on surfaces in our wood blanks guide.

The cheap extras that punch above their weight

What you need: a pad of graphite transfer paper so you can trace any design, a packet of spare wire nib tips because you’ll bend one eventually, and a brass tip cleaner to keep carbon off your nib.

A dirty tip is the number one reason beginners think their pen is faulty. Give it a quick jab into the brass cleaner every few minutes and half your “why won’t it burn” problems vanish.

Finish: two little bottles

What you need: a bottle of Watco Danish Oil for decorative pieces, and food-grade mineral oil for anything that touches food.
