Short answer: you can, but you should not. A wood burning tip runs at 400 to 750°C, and most plywood is held together with formaldehyde-based glue that turns to fumes the moment your nib crosses a glue line. For clean, safe pyrography, burn on solid basswood instead.
The short answer, in one line
Plywood is not one piece of wood. It is thin veneers glued in layers, and the glue, not the wood, is the problem. You get toxic fumes, uneven burns, and veneer that scorches through to the layer below. Solid, untreated hardwood like basswood is safer, burns evenly, and costs about the same.
Why plywood is a bad surface for pyrography
- Glue fumes. Most plywood, MDF and particleboard use urea or phenol formaldehyde adhesives. Heated, they off-gas formaldehyde, a known irritant. Your tip crosses a glue line every few millimetres.
- Uneven burning. The face veneer is often under 1mm thick. Push heat into it and you burn through to the glue and core, which scorch a different colour and ruin the line.
- Splinters and voids. Cheaper plywood has gaps and knots in the inner plies, so your nib can drop into a soft void mid-stroke.
- Treatment and coatings. Exterior and marine plywood is often treated or sealed, which adds another layer of fumes.

“But the listing says basswood plywood”
This is the trap that catches most beginners. Search “basswood” on Amazon and half the results are thin laminated sheets, balsa, or plywood sold under the basswood name. One popular “unfinished basswood” listing is literally titled Balsa Wood, Plywood Sheet in the same line. Those 1/8-inch and 1/16-inch craft sheets are laser-cutting stock, not solid burning boards.
How to tell before you buy:
- Read the material line, not the headline. If it says ply, laminated, or balsa anywhere, it is not solid basswood.
- Look at the edge in the photos. Solid wood shows continuous grain; plywood shows stacked horizontal layers.
- Check the thickness. Anything 1/16″ or 1/8″ sold in big multipacks is almost always thin ply or balsa. Solid burning plaques are usually 1/4″ or thicker.

The number-one beginner surface is solid, unfinished basswood: soft, pale, even-grained and low-smoke, so your lines stay crisp and your tip glides. Ready-to-burn basswood plaques cost about the same as a pack of plywood sheets and behave far better under a hot nib.

What about baltic birch or formaldehyde-free plywood?
Better, but still not ideal for burning. Even low-emission and baltic birch plywood is thin veneer over glued plies, so you get the same burn-through the moment you press past the top layer. If plywood is all you have, keep the heat low, work in a ventilated space with a mask, and treat it as practice, not finished work. For anything you plan to keep or sell, use solid wood.
