Why Temperature Is the #1 Beginner Variable
If you asked ten experienced burners what ruins the most beginner work, nine would answer: wrong temperature. Temperature is the single most controllable variable you have, and also the most common culprit behind scorched edges, blotchy shading, and lines that look muddy instead of crisp.
The reason beginners struggle is that temperature feels counterintuitive. You’d expect a hotter pen to create bolder work. It does, but it also creates burns you can’t erase. A pen set one notch too high doesn’t create darker lines, it creates scorch halos and unpredictable burns that look amateurish.

Temperature Ranges by Technique
Fine Lines and Detail Work
Fine-point solid-tip pens for lettering, line art, and portrait details need lower temperatures to give you precision. Start at 500-600°F. At this range, the tip marks the wood cleanly without the aggressive heat that causes wobbles to show darkly.
Move your hand at a steady, medium pace. Speed is your primary control at low temperatures. If a line comes out too light, move slower next time. If it’s too dark, move faster. Temperature stays the same.
Shading and Soft Transitions
Shading demands a different approach. You’re working with small circular motions or back-and-forth strokes, building up tone gradually. Run your pen at 600-750°F. The higher range gives you the heat to fill areas quickly without needing twenty overlapping passes.
The key to clean shading is layering light strokes. Your first pass should be barely visible. Your second pass builds it slightly darker. A third pass adds depth. This method prevents the dark blotches that come from trying to fill an area in one or two heavy passes.
Bold Lettering and Stamps
Thick letters and solid fill areas can handle 700-800°F. You’re moving slower and dwelling longer in each spot, so the higher temperature compensates by delivering consistent, dark burns without you having to work so carefully.
Lettering is the exception to the “move slowly” rule. You want letters uniform in tone. Test your first letter on scrap wood at your chosen temperature. If it matches your target color after a single, steady pass, that temperature is right. If it’s too light or too dark, adjust by 50°F and test again.
How Different Woods React to Temperature
Not all wood needs the same heat. Dense woods absorb heat slowly. Soft woods respond instantly. This is why a setting that works perfectly on basswood might scorch maple or come out too light on oak.
Soft Woods (Basswood, Poplar, Balsa)

Medium-Density Woods (Birch, Maple, Cherry)
Medium woods are the sweet spot for beginners. They’re forgiving and respond predictably. Use 600-750°F depending on your technique. These woods are dense enough to hold detail but not so dense that they demand aggressive heat.
Dense Woods (Oak, Walnut, Hickory)
Dense hardwoods need 750-850°F to show clean burns. At lower temperatures, dense woods produce faint marks that require multiple passes. The tradeoff is less control. At high temperatures, you risk scorching if your hand speed isn’t precise.
Dense woods are worth learning on, but not as a first project. Master your technique on medium-density wood first, then tackle oak or walnut with full awareness that the higher temperature demands better hand control.
The Test-Scrap Habit
Professional burners keep a piece of scrap wood next to their project. Before every session, and before changing any settings, they burn the same design on scrap first. This is not wasted time. It’s your temperature dial.
Burn a test line or small design on scrap. If the result matches what you want on your actual piece, you’re dialed in. If it’s too light, raise the temperature by 25-50°F and test again. If it’s too dark or scorched, lower it the same amount. Once the scrap looks right, move to the real piece with confidence.
This habit cuts failures dramatically. Five minutes on scrap might save an hour’s worth of burned wood you have to sand away or live with.
Fixing Too-Hot and Too-Cold Symptoms
Your Burn Is Too Dark (Scorched Edges)
Your pen is running too hot or your hand is moving too slowly. Lower the temperature by 50°F and try again on scrap. If the scorch ring persists, it’s heat, not hand speed. Keep lowering until the edge is clean.
Your Burn Is Too Light (Barely Visible)
Your temperature is too low, your hand is moving too fast, or both. Try slowing down your hand speed first. If that doesn’t fix it, raise the temperature by 50°F and test again. Light burns are easier to fix than dark ones because you can always add another pass.
Your Lines Look Fuzzy or Blotchy
This usually means inconsistent hand speed or temperature fluctuation. On a variable pen, check that the temperature dial hasn’t slipped. If your hand speed is the culprit, practice the same motion on scrap ten times in a row to dial in a steady pace.
