Wood burning turns wood into smoke, and that is completely fine when the wood is what nature made it. The danger comes from what people add to wood: glues, paints, preservatives, and a handful of naturally toxic species. Burn the wrong thing and you are breathing arsenic, formaldehyde or worse. Here is exactly how to tell the safe from the dangerous.
The one rule that keeps you safe
Only ever burn natural, solid, untreated, unfinished wood. If you do not know what a piece of wood is, or what has been put on it, don’t burn it. That single rule covers 95% of the risk.
Woods and materials you should never burn
- NIOSH-approved OV/AG/P100
- Filters vapours + fine particles
- Reusable half-face mask
- Pressure-treated wood, decking and outdoor timber is often treated with chromated copper arsenate. Burning it releases arsenic into the smoke and ash. Never.
- Painted, stained, varnished, sealed or waxed wood, the finish vaporises into toxic fumes when heated (older paint can contain lead). If it has a coating, it is not for burning.
- Plywood, MDF, particleboard, OSB and chipboard, all bonded with formaldehyde-based glues that off-gas when your tip hits them.
- Driftwood, soaked in sea salt, which burns into chlorine and dioxin compounds. Pretty, but not safe to burn.
- Pallet and reclaimed wood, unknown history and chemicals. Pallets stamped “MB” were fumigated with methyl bromide; even “HT” pallets may carry spills or finishes.
- Naturally toxic species, oleander, yew, laburnum, and the poison sumac/oak/ivy family carry toxins that survive burning.
- Spalted or mouldy wood, those beautiful black lines are fungus; heating and sanding release spores. Work it only with a respirator.
- Oily exotic hardwoods, some rosewoods and cocobolo are strong sensitisers and throw off heavy fumes and dust.
For the grey-area cases above, spalted pieces, oily exotics, or any long session, a proper respirator is cheap insurance for your lungs.
Woods that are safe, and burn beautifully
- Solid, unfinished basswood
- Pre-sanded, ready to burn
- No coatings or treatments
The good news: the best woods for pyrography are also the safest. Basswood is the number-one beginner wood, soft, pale, even-grained, and low-smoke, so your lines stay crisp. Birch, poplar, maple and beech are also excellent for detail. Pine is safe but resinous (more smoke, sticky tip). Cherry, walnut, oak and ash are harder and darker but perfectly safe.
The rule when buying: look for wood sold as unfinished / untreated, or use kiln-dried natural slices. Solid basswood is the easiest place to start.

Here is the part beginners miss: every wood you burn releases fine particles and a little smoke, safe species included. It is not toxic like treated wood, but you should not sit in a cloud of it for hours. Work in a ventilated space, and pull the smoke away from your face with a small fume extractor or fan.

Common questions
Is pine safe to burn? Yes, pine is a natural, untreated softwood, so it is safe. Just know it is resinous: it produces more smoke and sticky sap that gums up your tip, so work with ventilation and clean your nib often.
Is plywood, MDF or particleboard safe to burn? No. These are bonded with urea- or phenol-formaldehyde glues that release formaldehyde and other toxic fumes when heated. Never burn plywood, MDF, particleboard, OSB or chipboard, use solid wood instead.
Is it safe to do pyrography indoors? Yes, if you ventilate. Open a window, keep air moving, pull the smoke away from your face with a fan or fume extractor, and take breaks. For long sessions or resinous woods, wear a respirator.
Do I really need a mask or respirator? For short sessions on clean basswood with good airflow, it is optional. It becomes strongly recommended for long sessions, resinous woods, and essential for spalted (mouldy) or oily exotic woods.
How do I know if reclaimed or pallet wood is treated? Usually you cannot, so assume it is treated and do not burn it. Pallets stamped “MB” were fumigated with methyl bromide; only “HT” (heat-treated) pallets are chemical-free, but any paint, stain or oil on them still makes them unsafe.
Is spalted wood dangerous to burn? The dark “spalting” lines are fungus. Heating or sanding spalted wood can release mould spores that irritate your lungs, so only work it with a proper respirator and good ventilation.
