Carbon buildup kills detail work
Over time, carbon deposits accumulate on the heating element or tip of your wood burning pen. This crusty layer insulates the metal underneath, so your pen takes longer to reach temperature and delivers uneven heat to the wood. Fine lines become thick smudges. Details blur. Eventually, you’re pressing harder and burning longer to compensate, which burns the wood dark and makes control nearly impossible.
Regular cleaning prevents this. A clean tip heats faster, holds temperature more consistently, and lets you work with the precision the pen was designed for.
Cold vs. warm cleaning: which method works
Let the tip cool slightly before cleaning—not piping hot, but still warm enough to work with comfortably (around 200°F). Cold cleaning on a scorching-hot tip can cause thermal shock and microcracks; too cool and the carbon won’t budge as easily.
Wet a natural fiber brush (brass or horsehair, never synthetic) with water and gently scrub the tip in a circular motion. The goal is to loosen carbon, not to scrape it off with force. A few seconds of gentle brushing usually clears light deposits. For stubborn buildup, use a brass-wire cleaner designed for soldering iron tips.

Brass is soft enough not to damage the metal beneath but hard enough to cut through crust. It works on both solid tips and wire-nib burners, though wire nibs require gentler pressure.
Honing and stropping wire-nib tips
Wire-nib tips—especially fine ones—dull and fray with use. A honing strop (a leather pad with abrasive compound) refines the wire’s edge and restores its sharpness. Stroke the nib gently along the strop a few times per session to keep lines crisp. This is maintenance, not a deep clean; it takes seconds and extends the nib’s life significantly.
Storage keeps tips clean between sessions
Store your pen tip-up in a stand or tip-down in a ceramic cup filled with dry sand or rice. Both methods protect the delicate tip from knocks and keep dust from settling on it. Never wrap a cooling tip in cloth or paper—trapped heat can cause cracking, and the fibers will stick to the warm metal.
Consistent cleaning is faster and easier than digging out heavy buildup later.
